REASONS NOT TO AND WHY THEY ARE WRONG
(2008-2009)
Many claim that school uniforms are "too expensive" to make them mandatory in all middle and high schools. They believe that by implementing uniforms, they will be forced to not only by two sets of wardrobes, for school and for down time, but they may not be able to even afford the initial cost of the uniforms. This is an issue which can be easily solved. For the schools that cannot afford to buy uniforms from a direct retailer, they can allow the students to go out and buy their own uniforms. For example, the administrative can set a dress code of khakis with a white polo. This allows the parents to go to Walmart or Old Navy and buy any pair of khakis or white polo they would like. This makes it easier for the families to afford, while still maintaining a uniform.
Another issue some have with this concept is they do not think it is practical or realistic for the students' future. They believe that the students will not come across a situation where they will have to wear uniforms again or see a use for the strict wardrobe in their future. This is not the case. Many careers require uniforms to be worn at all times. Nursing and all health professions are a perfect example of this. A strict uniform is mandated for all employees, at all times. Not only are there careers that require uniforms, proving it is not unrealistic, but Justin Warshavsky, a former student at East Catholic High School, claims that by wearing uniforms he learned how to dress up and be presentable. By forcing students to dress up, it teaches them a good life lesson on how to look for special occasions and how to wear something other than jeans and a t-shirt. Overall, uniforms are very practical, due to the fact that will be in the students futures, as well as it teaches how to look presentable.
