uniforms create a safer enviroment
School uniforms proves to be a solution to the safety issue in many schools, especially those in the city. Caitlin Duncan, a student from Springfield Central High School, in Springfield, Massachusetts, admits that the threat of gangs and violence was always present in her school before uniforms were implemented.
As seen in this YouTube video, baggy jeans are a good hiding spot for nearly everything. The man pulls numerous guns out of his pants, as if you could not even tell they were there. This could be prevented by mandating uniforms. If you were to hold a pair of jeans and a pair of khakis in your hands, you would recognize that the khakis are much more maleable and thin than the jeans. By requiring khakis to be worn, items of these sorts will be more noticeable, reducing the likelihood of weapons being brought into the schools. The Long Beach, California, study proved a 20% reduction in the number of cases of weapon possessory and battery in the school (Wade).
A 20% reduction is one year is an incredible impact on this issue. As the years go on, this number will continue to rise. This is because uniforms also promote good discipline in the students. By making the students follow a rule such as wearing a specific uniform to school everyday, they will be less outraged when they are made to follow other rules. This makes them more accepting of rules and regulations and will make them less defiant.

A good example of increased safety is the issue going on in Hayward High School in Hayward, California. This school is exposed to the threat of gangs everyday. The issue at hand is the fact that "red, blue, yellow, white and black all have been associated with gangs" and the three principles have yet to decide how to eliminate this threat (NewsOne Staff). They have banned these colors, but this has not been a proven solution. This proves that a strict dress code, which accounts for 57% of the public schools in the United States, is not as effective as everyone may believe (Wade). The only real solution to danger such as gang violence is uniforms.
Uniforms will be not only reduce the odds of weapons being brought into schools and eliminate the identification of gang members through their colors, but it will also make intruders more noticeable. If everybody in the school is wearing the same colors and the same outfits, those who are not from the school will not be wearing those uniforms and therefore they will be standing out like a sore thumb. This will dramatically reduce the amount of intrusions into schools, making both the students and faculty safer.
